Ruto made the announcement while inspecting the ongoing construction site as part of a development tour of Baringo County, framing the expansion as central to his administration's broader affordable housing agenda.
Jobs and Opportunities for Young Kenyans
Beyond the bricks and mortar, the President highlighted the programme's role in creating livelihoods. He pointed to the range of trades the construction sites were absorbing, from masons, carpenters and plumbers to electricians, steel fixers and engineers.
Local contractors and construction firms, he added, were also finding business openings through the programme.
The planned addition of 520 units would represent a significant scale-up of what was already the county's flagship residential development under the housing programme.
A Wider Development Push in Baringo
The housing announcement was one of several infrastructure milestones the President flagged during his time in the county.
In Eldama Ravine, Ruto opened a new Huduma Centre aimed at bringing government services within easier reach of local residents. He also flagged off a KSh78.9 million Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project set to bring power to 343 households in the area.
Roads were another major focus. The President launched construction of a 70-kilometre road network linking Eldama Ravine, Mogotio and Baringo Central constituencies, a project valued at KSh4.2 billion.
At the Kabarnet Stadium, currently under construction with a 10,000-seat capacity, Ruto carried out an inspection and confirmed the facility is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. He also laid the foundation stone for Kabarnet University College, adding an educational dimension to the county's growing infrastructure portfolio.
Govt's Announcement on Affordable Housing Units
Elsewhere, TUKO also highlighted facts about the government’s revised prices for affordable and market housing units, which took effect on October 1, 2026, and who will be affected.
Applicants can still secure the previous prices if they applied before the deadline. But for new applicants, a two-bedroom affordable home now costs KSh 600,000 more.
