PETALING JAYA: Anyone who has endured the unpleasant experience of a filthy public toilet will appreciate the value of finding one that's clean, comfortable and properly maintained. Indeed, discovering an immaculate restroom while travelling can sometimes feel like striking gold.
Malaysia has been recognising establishments that take this humble amenity seriously, and the country's finest toilets have just received their moment in the spotlight.
The Toilet of the Year Awards 2026, held on Oct 20 in Kuala Lumpur, honoured eight winners across categories ranging from shopping centres and restaurants to petrol stations, schools and places of worship.
Organised by the housing and local government ministry, the competition attracted 849 entries, compared with 345 in its inaugural year in 2023.
Each category winner received RM20,000, a trophy and a certificate of recognition. So, which establishments have earned the distinction of offering some of Malaysia's finest facilities?
For shoppers, Sunway Square Mall in Subang, Selangor, took the honours, while Petronas Presint 18 in Putrajaya emerged victorious in the petrol-station category.
Travellers heading south along the North-South Expressway might want to remember the Seremban southbound rest and service area, which won the award for highway stops.
In Kuala Lumpur, The Lotas (MamaKim) in Desa Sri Hartamas secured the restaurant category, while Iconic Marjorie Penang, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel in Bayan Lepas, was recognised for its hotel facilities.
The winners weren't confined to commercial establishments: Masjid Nurussalam in Gerik, Perak took the award for places of worship, while SK Tok Randok in Ajil, Terengganu topped the school category.
Meanwhile, Shah Alam City Council earned recognition for the public toilet at Tasik Barat, Section 14, proving that municipal facilities can also hold their own against those in privately managed premises.
Together, the winners offer a geographical spread of establishments demonstrating that a decent restroom need not be an elusive luxury.
What makes a good toilet?
Although cleanliness is fundamental, a genuinely good public toilet also requires thoughtful design, reliable maintenance and facilities that accommodate different users.
Adequate lighting, functioning fixtures, accessible cubicles and sufficient supplies all contribute to an experience that visitors rarely celebrate when everything works - but certainly notice when something doesn't.
The awards form part of the ministry's broader Bersih, Menawan dan Wangi (BMW) initiative, which promotes toilets that are clean, attractive and pleasant-smelling.
Technology is also making its way into the country's restrooms: a recently introduced BMW-i smart toilet in Putrajaya, for example, features sensors that respond to odours, automated floor-drying systems and technology that records visitor numbers.
Such innovations may help improve maintenance, although sophisticated equipment alone is no substitute for consistent cleaning and responsible use.
A matter of national pride
The government has committed RM150 million between 2026 and 2030 to upgrading and maintaining public toilets managed by the local authorities. Housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming also revealed that RM154 million had been channelled towards improving 1,529 public toilets between 2023 and 2025.
Speaking at the awards, he observed that public toilets were among the first facilities through which visitors formed impressions of a country. "They are our calling card and the frontline of a country's image," he said.
Next year's awards will introduce a ninth category for universities and other higher education institutions, expanding the recognition of establishments that maintain exemplary restrooms.
