The Juba County Court has sentenced James Makwach Ker to two years in prison after finding that he lacked the necessary legal qualifications to practise law, according to the court’s ruling.
Makwach was convicted under Section 342 of the 2008 Penal Code, relating to impersonation.
The court also ordered him to surrender his law practice licence to the South Sudan Bar Association and immediately close his office.
The sentence is to take effect from September 26, 2026.
The case followed a complaint by the South Sudan Bar Association accusing Makwach of practising law without the required legal licence.
According to an earlier statement from the Secretariat for Lawyers’ Affairs, a review of practising lawyers found that Makwach did not possess the necessary legal qualifications to practise law.
The review also reportedly identified other individuals practising law without meeting the required conditions.
The Bar Association said Makwach was arrested while handling a case at a local court in Hai Referendum, Juba, before being taken to the Central Police Station for further legal procedures.
