9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville are doing Throwback Thursday right with a mini 9-1-1 Universe crossover that will give longtime fans a serious dose of déjà vu.
Tonight’s 9-1-1: Nashville Season 2, Episode 2, “Boys and Boils,” will see Captain Don Hart (Chris O’Donnell) and the 113 respond to a very unique, albeit familiar, emergency: a baby crying inside of a wall. That’s right, folks! We’re getting a callback to a memorable emergency from 9-1-1‘s first episode. In the words of Chimney (Kenneth Choi), “Another pipe baby?! No way!”
DECIDER’s exclusive crossover clip shows Ryan (Michael Provost) remembering the 118 once rescued a baby from a pipe, as he and Blue (Hunter McVey) learned during 9-1-1: Nashville‘s Season 1 crossover episode with 9-1-1. Ryan FaceTimes Buck (Oliver Stark), and though he and the 118 are in the midst of volcano chaos in LA, he and Chim spare a minute to talk their pals through the rescue.
“Chances are the baby’s in the plumbing system. First thing you have to do is shut off the water supply to the building and make sure nobody flushes,” Buck explains.
Captain Hart orders a water main shut-off and grabs a thermal gun, then he radios Cammie (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) and asks her to contact residents in the building to ensure no one flushes their toilets or runs their dishwashers.
Back in LA, Chimney sees Buck sitting down on the job and confronts him about being on his phone while “literal lava [is] coursing down Broadway.” When he finds out there’s a newborn stuck in a wall, however, he gets in on the call, greets the 113 over video, and leaves Buck to explain how Bobby (Peter Krause) conducted the clever rescue. (Never forget, Bobby is the GOAT!)
The crossover is small, just like Season 1’s call between dispatchers Cammie and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt). But it’s another seamless, satisfying reminder that these two worlds are intertwined. Consider this an appetizer to the other larger 9-1-1 Universe crossover that we know is likely on the horizon.
Ahead of 9-1-1: Nashville‘s fall return, series showrunner Rashad Raisani told TVLine, “We also want to do another big OG crossover. And I’ve been saying from day one that I want to bring some Lone Star people in, and that’s in the works in a big way… I think that’ll be a really great crossover around Episode 8 or 9.”
As always, we also have our fingers crossed for a 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville crossover event that brings Ryan Phillippe (Detective Rogue Kelly) and Jennifer Love Hewitt together for an I Know What You Did Last Summer reunion. During a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Phillippe said he “could see that, and I will tease that maybe that’s gonna happen.” So stay tuned!
In the meantime, tune into new episodes of 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville on Thursday, October 22 at 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
New episodes of 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville premiere Thursdays on ABC with next-day streaming on Hulu.
