KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) will engage with state governments to encourage the nationwide adoption of entertainment duty exemptions for local film screenings and theatre performances.
In a statement today, MAFE welcomed the exemption for local film screenings and theatre performances in the Federal Territories, which will take effect on Jan 1, 2027.
“The association views this as a positive step towards supporting Malaysia’s creative industries and strengthening the local film ecosystem,” it said.
MAFE also expressed its readiness to work with the Communications Ministry and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) to support the effective implementation of the measure.
“MAFE and its members remain committed to championing local content and supporting the continued growth of Malaysia’s film industry,” it said.
The exemption follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement when tabling Budget 2027 last week, during which he called for similar measures to be adopted by all states.
Anwar also announced an allocation of more than RM130 million for the film, music and creative content sectors to enhance Malaysia’s image, create jobs and bring local stories to international audiences.
