Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals in the Mecca region after they were convicted by a court of committing an alleged immoral act inside a mosque, according to the Saudi Interior Ministry.
The two individuals were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Bashir and Siti Akter. The ministry announced their executions in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Saudi security forces arrested the two Bangladeshis after they were found guilty of committing an immoral act inside a mosque in the holy city of Mecca. Following an investigation, formal charges were brought against them.
The case was referred to a court, which sentenced them to death, citing the seriousness of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of a holy site. The ruling was subsequently upheld by the higher authorities, and the executions were ordered under a royal decree.
The death sentences were carried out in the Mecca region on Wednesday, October 14.
In its statement, the Saudi Interior Ministry reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining national security, upholding the justice system and enforcing Islamic Sharia law against those who violate the sanctity of mosques or engage in acts deemed immoral.
The ministry also warned that anyone attempting to commit similar offences would face strict legal action.
