Wisconsin mother and son, 9, spot century-old tugboat in Lake Superior

For years, the waters along a familiar stretch of Lake Superior concealed a forgotten piece of maritime history. Then, during an ordinary beach outing, an unusual combination of calm conditions and remarkably clear water offered a Wisconsin mother and her young son a glimpse of what had remained hidden beneath the surface for decades: the remains of a century-old tugboat. The discovery, reported by Fox News and the New York Post states that Hannah Damon, director of outreach and administration at Camp Amnicon Adventures and Retreats in South Range, Wisconsin, came across the submerged vessel while spending time with her nine-year-old son. Despite visiting the same beach for 10 or 11 consecutive years and knowing that a wreck lay nearby, she had never managed to see it until now.

A shipwreck emerges from the water

What initially appeared to be scattered underwater debris soon revealed a more remarkable sight.

Weathered wooden beams, cables and a large pipe became visible through the unusually transparent water, allowing Damon to recognise the outline of a shipwreck, states the New York Post report.Excited by the unexpected discovery, she returned to shore to retrieve her camera and capture the moment. Her footage subsequently showed remnants of the vessel resting on the lakebed, offering a rare look at a wreck that is generally concealed from view, adds the report.

The conditions that made the sighting possible were particularly unusual for this part of Lake Superior. The surrounding Lake Superior clay plain contains substantial clay deposits, which can contribute to murky water and limit underwater visibility. Even when the lake appears calm, suspended sediment can make it difficult to distinguish objects beneath the surface. And the clarity did not last, and then a subsequent visit to the beach found the water murky again, reinforcing just how exceptional the viewing conditions had been.

The story behind the A.H. Pitz

As per The Daily Beast report, the vessel Damon and her son spotted was the A.H. Pitz, a steam-powered tugboat constructed in 1923 for the McMullen and Pitz Construction Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the boat was named after Armond Pitz.Measuring nearly 70 feet in length, the tugboat passed through several ownership changes during its working life before being abandoned near the mouth of the Amnicon River in 1951, states the New York Post report.According to Damon, the account she had heard was that the vessel was deliberately sunk to help stabilise a sandbar along the beach. Its remains have since become an unobtrusive part of the shoreline, largely hidden beneath Lake Superior's shifting conditions, adds the online report.Although the wreck was not newly discovered in the historical sense, the sighting offered a rare opportunity to observe a piece of regional maritime heritage that many visitors might never realise lies beneath the water.

A local discovery brings back memories

According to Fox News report, after recording the wreck, Damon shared her footage on social media, where it prompted a wave of reactions from people familiar with the area. The vessel was seen along Lake Superior by other commentators, some as early as 1967.The answer turned a family discovery into a discussion of local history and memories. The Daily Beast also covered the story, highlighting the unusual encounter with the long-submerged vessel.Damon was more than just excited by the wreck. Discovery united people by a shared landscape and a piece of the past that had been quietly preserved for generations. The A.H. Pitz has not suddenly returned to the surface; rather, the lake briefly allowed its hidden history to become visible. For a mother and son who had spent years on the same beach, that fleeting window transformed an ordinary day beside Lake Superior into an encounter with Wisconsin's maritime past.Image Courtesy: Camp Amnicon
