Dutch survey specialist Fugro has secured a contract with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to map about 3,200 sq km of seabed off Florida’s Atlantic coast.
The company will conduct hydrographic surveys for NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey, and the resulting data will update nautical charts supporting commercial shipping, government operations, and recreational boating.
The work covers a busy coastal region where severe storms, shifting seabed conditions and expanding maritime activity are increasing demand for accurate navigation data.
The surveys will also provide information to help monitor coastal changes and protect sensitive marine ecosystems.
“Reliable geo-data is essential for safe navigation, efficient maritime operations and understanding how our coastal environments are changing over time,” said Céline Gerson, Fugro’s group director for the Americas.
The latest award builds on Fugro’s relationship with NOAA and follows recent hydrographic survey work along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The company has also contributed to the Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative, mapping more than 56,000 sq km of Florida waters.
