According to the Solana Foundation, Solana plans to deploy Alpenglow on its crypto network on October 21, 2026. Epoch 1064 will start that day around 3 p.m. UTC. This consensus targets finality of 150 ms, compared to 12.8 s today. The challenge goes beyond speed since the crypto network is changing its mechanism.
In brief
- Solana plans activation of Alpenglow at epoch 1064, on October 21, 2026.
- The targeted finality decreases from 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds.
- Votor replaces TowerBFT as the consensus mechanism.
- Crypto validators must use a client based on Agave 4.3.0 and hold at least 0.8 SOL in their vote account.
What Alpenglow changes for the Solana crypto network
Announced more than a year ago, Alpenglow is the new consensus layer of Solana. Currently, this finality takes about 12.8 seconds on Solana. With Alpenglow, the Solana Foundation targets about 150 milliseconds. This represents a 99% reduction.
According to our calculations based on data from the Solana Foundation, the delay drops from 12,800 ms to 150 ms. This equals a decrease of about 98.8%. This value obviously remains a target. It will depend on the stake as well as the conditions of the crypto network.
| Indicator | Current situation or target |
| Finality with TowerBFT | 12.8 seconds |
| Target finality with Alpenglow | 150 ms |
| Theoretical delay reduction | 98.83 % |
| Slot duration after distinct reduction | 200 ms |
| Announced tolerance | 20% malicious stake + 20% offline |
Concretely, the change concerns Votor.
- Under TowerBFT, crypto validators send their votes as crypto transactions. Result: a block becomes final after accumulating 32 vote slots.
- With Votor, Solana validators exchange their votes directly. They then group them in certificates. A block can thus become final after one or two voting rounds.
What this number does not measure: the 150 ms concerns finality, not block production speed. Fees, programs, and crypto transaction format remain unchanged.
What this changes for crypto users
For a crypto user, a transaction on Solana should become final almost immediately. The Foundation states that crypto wallets and applications will continue working without user action.
This acceleration is particularly beneficial to payments, DEXs, and applications requiring quick confirmation. However, it does not guarantee immediate adoption by merchants, nor identical performance for every crypto transaction on the Solana network.
Moreover, the update could pose a risk for crypto validators. The fact is the migration is labeled a “breaking change”. In other words, validators must run a client based on Agave 4.3.0. Firedancer and Frankendancer are not supported during the transition.
That’s not all! Each voting Solana validator must keep at least 0.8 SOL in their vote account. This sum funds the Validator Admission Ticket, deducted at each epoch then burned. Without payment, the validator can no longer vote or produce blocks at the next epoch.
On October 21, the effective switch at slot 459,653,000 will need to be verified, planned after the first 5,000 slots of the epoch. If the 150 ms target is confirmed, Solana will strengthen its positioning on crypto uses requiring quick confirmation.
