Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh Struggles to Find Words for Team After Broncos Loss

After reaching the NFL postseason with an 11-6 record last season, the Los Angeles Chargers have fallen into a state of disarray this season.

On Sunday, the team appeared on the verge of their first win, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 17-10 lead, but ultimately failed to hold that lead in the fourth, falling 23-17 to the Denver Broncos. The loss dropped the Chargers to a dismal 0-5 start to their season.

And after the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh couldn't quite come up with the ideal message for his team amid such a disappointing losing streak to start the season.

"I don't know what that message is. It's just in the... players that fight their hearts out, you know? They give everything they had. That's the only way, best way, but yeah, that's, yeah," Harbaugh said, responding to the reporter's question.

Quarterback Justin Herbert had another poor performance, completing 14 of 24 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. However, he was sacked five times. In addition, he fumbled and threw an interception in the game's fourth quarter while trying to win at home.

Los Angeles also had nine costly penalties totaling 93 yards, adding to their on-field issues with trying to get their first victory this season.

The Broncos didn't particularly excel at any aspect in Sunday's game, but had an even performance in passing and rushing. Denver only converted one of their 12 attempts on third down, but also converted 2 of 5 red zone attempts into touchdowns. They also connected on more field goals in the win.

Sometimes that's all it takes when facing a team that has had such a woeful start as the Chargers, who are now 0-5 to begin their season. All of the other teams in the division have appeared to have potential to contend.

Things are going to get tougher for Harbaugh's team from here, as they'll visit Patrick Mahomes and the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Oct. 18. Making matters worse for the Chargers is the fact that Mahomes and company are coming off their bye week, well rested and potentially ready to take down a struggling divisional opponent on their schedule.
