The funding is part of a €3.4 billion ($3.98 billion) EU initiative supporting 77 clean-tech projects, including heat pump and battery manufacturing facilities across Europe.
French solar manufacturer Holosolis has been selected for funding under the EU Innovation Fund for its Solar4EU project, which aims to establish an integrated 5 GW solar cell and module manufacturing facility in Hambach, France.
The company is advancing plans to begin production in 2027, with a gradual ramp-up to full capacity by 2030. The project has already secured more than €220 million in initial financing, including €200 million through France’s C3IV tax credit scheme. Holosolis has also brought in Chinese solar manufacturer Trina Solar as a strategic technology partner.
Solar4EU is among 12 clean-tech manufacturing projects selected under the latest Innovation Fund call. Together, the projects are requesting almost €895 million ($1.05 billion) in support for manufacturing facilities covering solar modules, heat pumps, electrolysers, electric-vehicle batteries and rare-earth permanent magnets.
Other solar-related projects include Belgium’s ReGAIN Pilot, which aims to establish a circular production line for reusable germanium substrates for solar panels.
Battery manufacturing projects selected for funding include PowerCo Spain, which plans to develop a gigafactory for prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells for electric vehicles, and Poland’s ArisEU project, which aims to establish a 9 GWh LFP battery cell manufacturing facility.
The European Commission has selected 77 net-zero technology projects to receive €3.4 billion ($3.98 billion) under the Innovation Fund, financed through revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
The selected projects span 23 European Economic Area countries and cover industrial decarbonisation, renewable energy, energy storage, clean-tech manufacturing, low-carbon mobility, critical raw materials and carbon management.
According to the Commission, the projects could avoid approximately 290 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent during their first 10 years of operation.
The selected projects will now enter grant agreement preparations with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The Commission expects the process to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
