The lady posted a video on 14 October 2026 about her move to South Africa. She shared three things she would do completely differently if she had the chance to start over.
The UK citizen @ourcptlife shared her first regret: shipping everything. She and her family packed up their full Manchester home and sent it all to South Africa by container. The catch: the belongings had not even arrived yet, and she was already questioning whether they needed most of it. She noted that people had warned her appliances would be pricey in South Africa, but she had already found decent deals, making the decision to ship feel even less necessary.
Her second lesson was financial. While the family budgeted for the obvious expenses, such as flights, rent, shipping costs and deposits, it was the smaller, unglamorous costs that caught them off guard. Temporary furniture, kitchen basics, car hire and buying duplicate items they already owned but could not access while everything sat in a container all added up faster than expected. She said:
"Moving countries isn't just about getting on a plane. You're basically starting again with all the boring everyday stuff."
Despite everything, she made her position clear: she has no regrets about the move itself, only about how she prepared for it. Watch the video of her regrets below:
The comment section was filled with people who either related to her experience or had tips to share:

"I love following your story. My parents emigrated here in 1970. They had us kids 5, 4 and me, 3. Following you helps me understand how my Mum felt. I have my British passport, but South Africa is my home."

"I know you're new in Cape Town. Take it easy and breathe, don't stress. Wish you all the best."

"Maybe do a three-month lease in a furnished home first?"
