Arkansas State wide receiver Hunter Summers was arrested by university police on Wednesday on suspicion of third-degree domestic battering, after an argument that police say began with a reaction on social media.
Arkansas State University police responded to a disturbance at the Northpark Quads, a campus residence building, shortly before 4:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. local time) on Tuesday, Oct. 21. According to the woman who reported the incident, the argument started when Summers, 21, became angry that she had reacted with a fire emoji to a social media post from one of his former teammates. Neither the teammate nor the post has been identified in the police account made public so far.
The woman told police that Summers shouted slurs at her and slammed her phone to the ground repeatedly, cracking it. She said he grabbed her by the neck and slammed her against a wall and onto a picture frame, leaving red marks on her back. She also told officers he bent her glasses, threatened to break her school laptop and threatened to punch out a window.
A witness in a nearby room told police they heard yelling, a crash and the woman telling Summers to leave, according to Jonesboro Right Now.
Officers questioned Summers at the team’s Football Operations Center. He admitted to arguing with the woman and slamming her phone but denied putting his hands on her.

Where Hunter Summers’ case and season stand
Summers was booked into the Craighead County Detention Center on a $2,500 bond and was released Thursday afternoon, according to the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office. An incident report lists a district court appearance on Nov. 24. Third-degree domestic battering is a Class A misdemeanor under Arkansas law, which carries a maximum of one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

As of Thursday, Arkansas State had not announced a suspension. The athletic department said in a statement to KAIT that it is aware of the matter and is following all university policies, guidelines and procedures, including legal and Title IX processes, and that it could not comment further.
The Title IX reference means a university review is running alongside the criminal case, which has no court date until late November.
Summers, a senior from Prosper, Texas, has been on the Red Wolves’ roster since 2024. He has 31 catches for 422 yards and three touchdowns in five games this season after catching 44 passes for 505 yards and four touchdowns in 2025.
Arkansas State hosts Georgia State on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro.
The university had not said by Thursday if Summers would be available.
