Oh, Girls. A decade on from the finale, it remains among the best TV depictions of the mayhem (and horror) of navigating your early twenties. To celebrate the news of its impending return, Vogue has jumped back into the original series for a rewatch. Aside from digging up a treasure trove of golden quotes (“I am, like, the most scared person who’s alive…”) it has also been a reminder of the show’s incredible 2010s beauty moments. How could we have forgotten Marnie’s wedding make-up? As fans prepare to be reunited with their hapless Greenpoint faves, revisit some of the best beauty moments on Girls.
Marnie’s wedding make-up
While not quite “Ralph Lauren meets Joni Mitchell”, is it weird to say that, in hindsight, Marnie’s not actually wearing that much make-up? Sure, the placement isn’t great, and the colours all lean a bit warm, but it’s not quite so alarming as it seemed at the time. This episode also gave us a classic Girls quote, when the bride briefed her make-up artist on her desired aesthetic nod to her cultural heritage… “which is white Christian woman”.
Actually, Marnie’s wedding in general
Marnie in a flower crown. Shosh’s platinum blonde hair and red lip. Hannah’s actually great pixie. Jessa’s boho mane. Truly a bouquet of millennial bridal beauty inspiration.
Hannah cutting her own bangs
As a voice of a generation, it makes sense that Hannah would pioneer micro bangs.
Jessa acknowledging the hair envy
To be fair, Jessa really does have great hair.
Jessa proving her own point
If there is one specific moment in the show that encapsulates Jessa being hateable and having good hair, this is it.
Hannah feeling a bit unlike herself
Hannah being ahead of her time, yet again (the synthetic wig and odd lipstick combo had a big runway moment at London Fashion Week).
Marnie and Soojin
Greta Lee(!) as Soojin in frosty make-up, ombré hair, and orange-red nails. Marnie in a beanie. Perfection.
Hannah and Elijah’s matching bandanas
A masterclass in BFF hair accessories.
Shoshanna and Jessa’s opposing (but equally on trend) takes on 2010s beauty
Shosh, with her preppy Gossip Girl-esque blowout and headband, was far removed from Jessa’s artfully undone boho fishtail braids.
Shosh’s flicked bob and barrette
The flicked bob – as accessorised with a statement barrette by Shoshanna – is having a revival. But it’s the black eyeliner in her waterline that really screams 2010s.
The collective commitment to some sort of updo
Whether Hannah’s makeshift ponytail or the girls’ various forays into front twists, plenty of attention was paid to jazzing up the hair.
Misery, as modelled by Marnie
Marnie had never felt more miserable. In Jessa’s eyes, she had never looked better.
