The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has called for prompt, thorough and impartial investigations into the violence at the Supreme Court, urging arrests where lawful grounds exist and prosecutions while respecting constitutional rights, including the presumption of innocence.
LAZ president, Arnold Kaluba, expressed concern over the violence and unruly conduct that occurred on the premises of an institution entrusted with the administration of justice.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Kaluba condemned the violence that erupted at the Supreme Court on October 13 following the adjournment of the Lima Constituency election petition.
He acknowledged that Chief Justice Mumba Malila had condemned the incident as flagrant lawlessness and an assault on the administration of justice.
“The court premises must remain safe, secure and functional spaces where disputes are resolved through application of the law, free from intimidation and political coercion,” Kaluba said.
He said judicial authority derived from the people and that any attack on the courts undermined the constitutional order.

Kaluba cited Articles 118(1), 122(4) and 119(3) of the Constitution, which provide for judicial authority vested in the people, the protection of the independence and dignity of the Judiciary, and open justice.
He welcomed the Chief Justice’s assurance that security at Judiciary premises had been strengthened and that law enforcement agencies were investigating the incident.
Kaluba urged the Zambia Police Service to swiftly investigate the matter and arrest and prosecute those responsible in accordance with the law.
He also called on political parties and other stakeholders to unequivocally condemn violence and take internal disciplinary action against members found to have participated in the incident.
Kaluba further urged citizens to respect the sanctity of court premises and allow legal processes to proceed without interference.
“The Association has formally written to the Chief Justice seeking an urgent courtesy meeting to discuss the incident and measures to safeguard the Judiciary,” he said.
