KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has seized 2,380 squishy toys worth RM30,391 over suspected non-compliance with safety standards since Oct 3.
Its director, Mohd Mufsi Lat, said the soft, sponge-like toys, which came in various shapes and designs, were seized following 101 inspections across the state.
He said the inspections found that the toys allegedly did not carry the Malaysian conformity (MC) mark, as required under the relevant regulations.
"Action was taken against six premises in Kuala Terengganu, with investigations opened under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and regulations governing toy safety standards.
"Toys designed or intended for use in play by children under 14 must comply with the prescribed safety standards," he said in a statement today.
Mufsi said companies found guilty could be fined up to RM250,000 for a first offence, while individuals could face a fine of up to RM100,000, jail for up to three years, or both.
