A centuries-old town hall in Ligomes, France, was set alight on 17 October 2026 as violent unrest spread across the country. The fire broke out during protests that had grown into a nationwide movement, with demonstrators raising alarms over deteriorating school conditions, deep social inequality and the soaring cost of living.
Night-time footage captured thick plumes of smoke rising from the historic building as flames consumed its structure. By morning, a fire department crane moved in to assess what remained — a blackened, smouldering shell of a building that had stood for generations.
France protests spread nationwide
The unrest was not limited to the Ligomes town hall. Demonstrations had broken out in towns and cities across France, with frustration over government inaction driving crowds into the streets. The targeting of civic buildings appeared to be a deliberate act of defiance, though the destruction of a landmark with deep historical roots drew sharp criticism from many observers.
The images hit a nerve internationally. The town hall was constructed in 1876 and survived both World Wars, making its destruction at the hands of protesters all the more striking for many who saw the footage.
