Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna's Ranabaali takes audiences back to one of the darkest periods of colonial Indian history. Set against the Great Madras Famine of 1876–78, the period action drama explores starvation, British rule and the resistance that emerged when ordinary people struggled to survive. But how much of the film is based on real events? Did Ranabaali and Jayamma actually exist? And is the story of the famine, which killed millions of people, being told through fictional characters?
Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, Ranabaali features Vijay Deverakonda as the warrior Ranabaali, Rashmika Mandanna as his wife Jayamma, and South African actor Arnold Vosloo as Sir Theodore Hector, the British colonial antagonist. The film uses a real historical catastrophe as its backdrop but builds a fictional narrative around its central characters.
What is Ranabaali about? What was the Great Madras Famine of 1876–78?
The Great Madras Famine was a devastating humanitarian crisis that affected large parts of southern and western India between 1876 and 1878. The Madras Presidency, a vast administrative region under British rule, was among the worst-hit areas. Its territory included parts of present-day Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other regions.
The crisis began after severe drought and failed monsoons damaged crops and disrupted agricultural livelihoods. For millions of people who depended on farming, the loss of harvests meant losing both their food supply and their income. The consequences extended far beyond the immediate shortage of grain. Hunger, disease and displacement contributed to a huge loss of life. Historical estimates vary because records from the period are incomplete and scholars differ over the geographical areas and causes of mortality included in their calculations.
Some estimates put the wider famine's death toll above 10 million. The tragedy affected a much larger region across India.

Why is the famine linked to British colonial rule?
The famine was triggered by drought, but the scale of the disaster has also been examined through the policies adopted by the British administration. Historians have debated the role of colonial revenue demands, food distribution, grain markets and the relief measures introduced during the crisis.
Sir Richard Temple, a British administrator involved in famine relief, became associated with an approach that emphasised limiting the cost of assistance. Relief policies and the quantity of food provided to people in camps have been criticised in historical accounts.
The crisis also raised questions about the continued movement of food through commercial markets while people in famine-stricken districts faced starvation. Drought alone does not explain every aspect of the catastrophe; the vulnerability of rural communities and the response of the authorities also mattered. Research published in Social History of Medicine examined competing explanations for mortality during the Madras famine, including starvation and disease. It highlights why the death toll and its causes need to be understood through historical evidence rather than a single number.
Who is Ranabaali in real life?
Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabaali is not presented as a straightforward portrayal of a single, clearly documented historical individual. Instead, the character draws on the broader history of resistance during British colonial rule and the folk traditions of the Rayalaseema region.

According to the film, the story takes inspiration from accounts of local warriors and communities that resisted colonial authority during a period of extreme hardship. Such resistance could take different forms, from challenging local officials and refusing demands to fighting over access to food and resources.
Many regional folk traditions preserve stories of people who stood up to powerful rulers. However, oral accounts and historical records do not always provide the same level of detail about individuals, dates and events. The film brings these themes together in Ranabaali, a warrior who fights against colonial oppression and seeks to protect his people. His story is rooted in the historical atmosphere of the famine era, but viewers should not assume that every event shown on screen happened exactly as depicted.
Ranabaali is therefore better understood as historical fiction inspired by real suffering and traditions of resistance than as a biopic of a confirmed historical figure.
Who are the real Ranabaali and Jayamma, played by Rashmika Mandanna?
Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma, Ranabaali's wife and a central figure in his personal life. Her character is part of the film's portrayal of a community confronting famine and colonial power. However, available reporting does not establish Jayamma as a documented historical person whose life the film reconstructs. Like Ranabaali, she belongs to the film's fictional narrative, which uses the period's social and political realities to build its characters.
Jayamma's role also gives the story a personal dimension. A famine is not only a record of crop failures and death tolls. It affects families, relationships, livelihoods and the choices people make when survival becomes uncertain. Through Jayamma and Ranabaali, the film connects the larger historical backdrop with the lives of individuals caught in it. The extent to which their relationship or specific actions reflect historical accounts should be distinguished from the filmmakers' dramatic interpretation.
