Segun Showunmi, a former ally of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has warned all the presidential candidates against any attempt to declare themselves as winner of the 2027 election.
Showunmi warned all the presidential candidates that they do not have the reputation of the self acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola, hence should not make such an attempt.
Speaking with journalists in a viral video on Saturday, Showunmi reminded the opposition that Abiola was jailed for declaring himself as winner of the 1993 presidential election.
According to him, only the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, reserves the right to declare a candidate as winner of the presidential election.
He said: “And please let me use this opportunity to warn them, I heard some people saying they would release their own election results before INEC. Anybody who attempts to declare himself will be taken for treason.
"And please I can't find anyone of them that has Abiola's reputation and when he dared to declare himself President without getting himself declared properly, of course he was thrown in jail.
"The only authority that has powers to declare election results by our law is INEC. All these wishful thinkers that we will not agree, just banish it.
"I have advised them now, before when the time comes people will say Segun they are your friends and you need to advise them
"They should know that the law in Nigeria is very strict, it is a treasonable offence.”
