A newly licenced teenage motorist faces impaired driving charges after he was stopped in Scarborough with a tire missing from his vehicle earlier this month.
Toronto Police say their Air Support Unit helped track down the accused — a G1 licence holder who is not allowed to drive without an experienced, fully licenced driver and is required to maintain a zero blood-alcohol level — after officers responded to “multiple calls” for a suspected impaired driver near Danforth Rd. and Eglinton Ave. E. just before 9 p.m. on Oct. 9.
“It is alleged that the driver of the vehicle was impaired and driving erratically,” police said in a statement released Wednesday, adding the vehicle allegedly “almost hit a pedestrian.”
“The front driver-side tire was gone and the vehicle was being driven on its rims,” police explained.
“The Toronto Police Service Air Support Unit located the vehicle from the air and guided officers to safely locate the vehicle and arrest the driver,” police added.
Teen faces numerous charges
A 17-year-old Toronto boy, who can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), is charged with impaired operation of a conveyance, impaired operation — blood alcohol concentration (BAC) 80 plus, failure to comply with YCJA sentence, novice driver- BAC above zero, and class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by a qualified driver.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6.
“The Toronto Police Service would like to thank the members of the public who called 911 and remind motorists that impaired driving puts everyone at risk,” police said. “Suspected impaired drivers should be reported immediately by calling 911.”
Anyone with information regarding this investigation is urged to call police at 416-808-4300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
