The global budget smartphone market faces mounting pressure in 2026 as rising memory costs make it increasingly difficult for manufacturers to produce low-cost devices profitably.
According to the GIZGUIDE research report, worldwide sales of cheap smartphones are estimated to fall by 22% in 2026. This reduction is linked to the rising demand for AI infrastructure, which is driving up prices for DRAM and NAND memory chips used in smartphones.
AI centers must store large amounts of data, increasing the demand for high-capacity memory and storage components and raising smartphone production costs.
Low-Cost Phones Face Growing Pressure
Traditional budget smartphones usually cater to customers looking for basic functionality at affordable prices. However, rising component prices make it increasingly challenging for producers to maintain the same costs without incurring losses.
Low-end phones will feel this especially, as they have little leeway to absorb extra production costs. Higher selling prices will reduce their appeal to customers seeking affordable products.
Hence, producers need to decide how best to absorb the extra cost, raise prices, or change their strategies to remain profitable.

Smartphone Industry Faces Wider Shift
This pressure on budget smartphones comes amid wider shifts in the global mobile phone market. Memory shortages and higher component prices have raised fears about shipments and affordability.
Industry experts forecast that the current memory deficit could redefine the competitive landscape for smartphone brands. Larger companies with sufficient resources and pricing power will be better positioned than smaller companies to handle the increased costs.
Higher demand for AI hardware creates another problem for the industry, which depends on keeping its products affordable.
While consumers may expect higher prices and fewer budget options, manufacturers will need to find ways to manage cost pressures amid high demand.
The anticipated 22% decline points to the growing challenges facing the budget segment of the smartphone industry.
