Betting on whether a stock goes up is old news. Betting on whether Tesla hits a delivery number, or whether Coinbase clears a trading volume threshold, just got the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s blessing.
On October 14, 2026, the SEC approved a rule change letting Cboe Global Markets list and trade binary options tied to key performance indicators reported by public companies. That makes Cboe the first securities exchange cleared to offer this kind of product.
How the KPI contracts work
Think of these contracts as a yes-or-no question with money attached. Will a company’s reported metric land at or above a set threshold? If yes, the contract pays $1. If no, it pays $0.
The answer comes from the numbers companies report in their SEC filings. The filing either shows the metric clearing the bar or it doesn’t.
The initial lineup covers more than 100 metrics across 23 companies. Coinbase, Nvidia, Tesla and Apple are among the names on the list.
Examples include Coinbase’s trading volume, Nvidia’s data-center revenue and Tesla’s vehicle deliveries. Each is a distinct operational number rather than a reflection of the overall share price.
Robinhood Markets will be the first retail broker to distribute the contracts. Both Cboe and Robinhood plan to waive fees on the products until December 31, 2026, though that arrangement remains subject to regulatory review.
One catch: nobody can trade them yet. Cboe Clear U.S. is still waiting on its temporary registration to handle clearing, so the contracts are approved but not live.
Why Cboe wants a piece of prediction markets
These products fall under existing securities-options investor protections. That sets them apart from event contracts overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the regulator that typically handles this type of product.
What this means for traders and the prediction market race
The market’s first reaction was split. Cboe shares rose more than 4% after the announcement, while Robinhood shares fell nearly 9%.
The crypto angle is direct. Coinbase’s trading volume is one of the metrics on offer, effectively turning a key gauge of crypto market activity into a tradable yes-or-no question. Traders who track exchange activity closely now have a way to bet on that specific number without taking on Coinbase stock risk.
A few things are worth watching from here. First, when Cboe Clear U.S. secures its temporary registration, since that is the gate to actual trading. Second, whether the fee waivers survive regulatory review through the end of 2026.
