While many people experience music through listening or performance, a growing number of young Ugandans are finding a livelihood behind the scenes by repairing and restoring musical instruments.
At a workshop tucked inside the premises of Brass Africa in Nsambya, Kampala, Joan Nassazi, 23, and Affection Thomas, 24, spend their days repairing and fine-tuning brass instruments used by bands across the country. Surrounded by tools that could easily be mistaken for those of automobile mechanics, the pair work on everything from trumpets and saxophones to drums, ensuring musicians produce the best possible sound.
