Afpop Expo 2026 returned with a fresh new look. Hoping for an excellent turn-out in the ‘Community Algarve’ area, the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA)’s team was in attendance with new attractive goodies, glass-cases, pens, and tote-bags (all also available at their Charity shops).
The Afpop Expo change of dates (this year on October 3 and 4) also clashed with the World Animal Day lunch, which Jackie rescheduled and was still well attended.
A big thank you goes to the gentleman who came to APAA’s stand at afpo expo and took a liking to their ‘freebie’ pen. “He wanted to know how much it was. Jenny explained it was a giveaway for visitors who took an interest in APAA’s stand and its work. He paid €60 for it. He thought our charity was worth it! Also thanks to all our visitors who took time-out to say hi!”
Jenny and Jackie packed and unpacked APAA’s white van ready for the next load. “Cats to the vet for SNiP’ing. Goodies for the shops and pop-ups… It promises to be a busy season ahead.” Most of the funds raised go towards APAA’s Spaying and Neutering Programme (SNiP), which helps control feral cat populations, as well as efforts to rehome abandoned animals.
“Luckily, we have a good friend at the Gatil (cattery) in Portimão who took in Mickey, a black cat.” Black? “Lucky for a lot of people, but unfortunately not here in Portugal.” Mickey’s new home is with Porsche, a rather gorgeous and tolerant German Shepherd.

A recent piece of good news!
An animal charity that awards annual grants to charities in Portugal re-instated APAA. “A huge mistake in giving some of the allocated funds to cat food for cat colonies.” Apparently, only meant for dog food. Ouch! “Read the small print!” Jenny shrugs. “Unfortunately, it was the cat people who got penalised. Won’t happen again, we’ll feed the cats from other funds!”
