A 36-year-old woman has been charged over a fatal hit-and-run near Szigetszentmiklós, Hungary, after allegedly drunk driving without a driving licence, killing an electric tricycle rider and leaving the victim without assistance.
Drunk woman with no driving licence caused fatal accident
The Budakörnyék District Prosecutor’s Office has requested an eight-year prison sentence, an eight-year ban from public affairs and a permanent driving ban for the accused. The case will be heard by the Szigetszentmiklós District Court.
According to prosecutors, the woman was working at a car wash near Szigetszentmiklós when the incident happened in February 2025. She allegedly took two customers’ cars without their permission on separate occasions to buy alcohol.
Took customers’ cars to buy alcohol
The woman first drove a car left at the car wash for cleaning to a nearby alcohol shop without the owner’s knowledge. After purchasing and consuming the alcohol, she allegedly took another vehicle – while already drunk – entrusted to the business for cleaning and set off for the shop again.
As she approached the shop’s car park, the woman reportedly turned at speed without noticing an electric tricycle approaching from the opposite direction. The tricycle rider had the right of way. The front left side of the car struck the tricycle, causing it to overturn and throwing its rider to the ground. The victim, reported by local media to have been 41 years old, suffered fatal injuries.
Driver examined victim before fleeing
After the collision, the drunk woman reportedly got out of the car and approached the unconscious woman lying on the ground. When she was unable to lift the victim, she returned to the vehicle and drove away without calling emergency services or providing further assistance.
People who came out of the nearby shop and an adjacent property called an ambulance. However, the victim’s injuries were so severe that she died at the scene. The prosecutor’s office has charged the woman with causing death through drink-driving, two counts of unauthorised use of a vehicle and an aggravated offence of failing to provide assistance.

Prosecutors seek eight-year prison sentence
The prosecution has asked the court to impose an eight-year custodial sentence and bar the defendant from public affairs for the same period. It has also requested that she be permanently disqualified from driving. The accused is currently under criminal supervision, according to the prosecution’s announcement. Local media have also reported that she did not give a statement during the investigation.
The case will now proceed before the Szigetszentmiklós District Court, which will decide whether the defendant is guilty and determine any sentence. The charges and requested penalties represent the prosecution’s position; the court has yet to deliver its verdict.
