Since its launch, the Xbox 360 controller has been the gold standard for PC gaming (and, frankly, a bar every console controller needs to meet). If you've ever used one, it's not hard to see why; the Xbox 360 controller fits most hands comfortably — yes, even the tiny ones — and is incredibly durable.
While the controllers had their fair share of design faults, like bumpers that would get stuck or cords that would wear out, plenty stillwork after years of use. Show me an Xbox Elite controller that's still working that smoothly.
I still use an Xbox 360 controller as my primary PC gaming device. I've tried others, but it just doesn't feel the same. Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it's just that I've used a 360 controller for so long that anything else feels wrong. Either way, it still stands as the best PC gaming controller ever made.
It works out of the box with most computers
That's slightly less impressive now, but it was a big deal when it first launched
Here's the thing: two decades ago, fewer PC games supported controllers. The gamepads available were clunky and hard to use, often requiring software that needed a degree in theoretical physics and dark magic to make sense of. The Xbox 360 controller supported XInput auto-mapping on most Windows devices, meaning the inputs were automatically read when you plugged it in. You didn't need complicated software to map key bindings to the controller.
In 2026, that might not seem like that big of a deal. Controller support is far more widespread now, especially with PC receiving one-time console exclusives. But even now, the Xbox 360 controller is one of the easiest and most reliable gamepads on the market, and you can connect it to almost any modern Windows device, and it will work seamlessly.
It's comfortable for extended use
My hands don't hurt after long play sessions
There were times I could spend all day playing a video game, but that depended heavily on the console. If you've ever tried playing an NES for hours on end, good luck with the hand cramps. Even the original PlayStation was rough in that regard; it took a few years for the PlayStation 4's ergonomics to catch up.
The Xbox 360 controller was comfortable and seemed built to fit an actual human hand, unlike the "Duke" controller of the original Xbox. It was unnecessarily large and outweighed only by the console itself. The Xbox 360 controller's sleek design was a breath of fresh air after that, and it still holds up well even as other brands have caught up in design.
It's affordable
Third-party and used controllers are easy to come by
As far as I'm concerned, the Xbox 360 controller is near the peak of gamepad design. While the advanced features of the Xbox Elite controller are awesome, I mostly use them in FPS games — and if I'm playing an FPS on PC, I'll use a mouse and keyboard. The only other time I ever used the paddles was in racing games that required manual shifting, and that was pretty rare. Since I can get a decent third-party Xbox 360 controller for my PC for around $20, compared to spending at least three times that for a modern gamepad, the winner is clear.
All those extra features are nice, but for most players they're not worth the dramatically higher cost. If you play a lot of console games, the Xbox Elite controller is an amazing investment, but I can't recommend one over a standard gamepad for PC players.
The Xbox 360 controller is starting to show its age
20 years of innovation isn't nothing
As much as I love the Xbox 360 controller (and still largely recommend it), a few issues need addressing. First is that there's no Bluetooth. If you're using an original Xbox 360 wireless controller, you need a dedicated Xbox 360 receiver to use it with PCs. Wired variants are more readily available, but the cable can be annoying. And that points to the biggest issue: outdated hardware. There's no USB-C support, and if you're using a wireless model, you'll go through a lot of batteries.
However, the biggest issue is the D-pad. Many gamers use a gamepad for emulation, and the Xbox 360 controller's D-pad was built as an enhanced interrogation tool. It's a little small for my tastes, has mushy inputs, and lacks the precision needed for platformers and fighting games. Seriously, try playing Celeste on a 360 controller if you want to test your sanity.
The Xbox Elite Series 2 controller seen above is, objectively, a more powerful, more functional controller, but new isn't always better.
Good design never goes out of style
The Xbox 360 controller proves that good design doesn't go out of style and that newer doesn't always mean better. Sure, there are incredibly customizable controllers out there, but for the average person? The Xbox 360 controller is hard to beat. The fact that I've used it for this many years and haven't felt the need to upgrade is a testament to that.
