Following the rededication of St. Mary’s Church, Warwick, Bermuda, Archbishop Philip Wright and Mrs. Carla Suite Wright led a historic retreat for Bermuda’s Anglican clergy and their spouses—the first retreat he has led for clergy anywhere since becoming Archbishop and the first time he and Mrs. Wright have led one together.
A spokesperson said, “The archbishop offered a rich, pastoral reflection on Christian leadership, emphasizing that one of its central tasks is to guide God’s people through life’s vicissitudes in the light of faith.
“He reminded clergy that leaders are called to serve both the household of God and their own families, acknowledging the delicate balance required. He stressed that ministry must be grounded in prayer, reflection, and disciplined spiritual practice, essential tools that keep clergy connected to God and to one another.”
Quoting the Ordination Service, he highlighted the charge given to all clergy: “Because you cannot bear the weight of this ministry in your own strength but only by the grace and power of God, pray earnestly for the gift of His Holy Spirit. Pray that He will each day enlarge and enlighten your understanding of the Scriptures, so that you may grow stronger and more mature in your ministry, as you fashion your life and the lives of your people on the Word of God.”
A spokesperson added, “He encouraged clergy never to tire of expanding their knowledge, deepening their spiritual lives, and strengthening their leadership—not merely to remain relevant, but to provide the quality of leadership God’s people deserve. Drawing on the teaching of Jesus, he reflected on the call to servant leadership:
“Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant… just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” [Mark 10:45]
Themes and Practices Shared
“The retreat examined several areas essential to clergy well-being and parish vitality:
- Rule of Life for ministry and home
- Balancing family life and pastoral responsibilities
- Healthy boundaries in ministry
- Building emotional resilience
- Faithful households rooted in prayer, scripture, worship, forgiveness, hospitality, and service
- Marks of a thriving Christian community: worship, welcome, mutual care, honest speech, forgiveness, shared gifts, service, and care for creation
“Clergy also reflected personally on themes such as being created for communion, rooted in love, many members, one body, reconciled, and sent. Archbishop Wright shared many stories with us, including “the Indian Water Carrier.” A water carrier had two pots on a pole across his shoulders. One pot was perfect and delivered a full portion. The other was cracked and leaked half its water on the walk home. After two years, the cracked pot felt ashamed and apologized. The carrier smiled and said, “Did you notice the flowers only on your side of the path? I planted the seeds there, and every day you watered them.” His Grace said we often feel like the cracked pot, leaking, imperfect, not quite enough for ministry or marriage. But God has placed us on purpose, and He uses the very cracks we are ashamed of to water something beautiful that the “perfect” pot never could. Your weaknesses are not wasted. They’re where the flowers grow.
“A “community check‑up” invited clergy to assess how well their parishes embody the marks of a faith household. Mrs. Wright offered wise and joyful insights, encouraging clergy to embrace laughter and fellowship. A lively Clergy Bingo session—matching squares with colleagues and collecting signatures—brought humour, connection, and discovery. Participants shared what they learned about one another, strengthening bonds across the diocese.
“On the final night for Archbishop Philip Wright and Mrs. Carla Suite Wright, we gathered at Holy Trinity Cathedral, where Bishop Nicholas Dill offered a reflection on marriage. Each clergy member and spouse received a piece of rope tied in a knot, symbolizing the vows they made to one another and the strength of the bond that holds them together.
“Couples shared their wedding dates and a meaningful moment from their journey, creating a tender moment of unity, gratitude, and renewed commitment. We enjoyed a sumptuous feast, celebrating fellowship, shared ministry, and the joy of serving Christ together.”
