By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Landing Belize’s first European air service comes with a price tag.
Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler told 7 News that Belize will pay around US$2 million over three years as part of the deal with Discover Airlines. He described the amount as affordable compared to what had been demanded in past negotiations.
BTB aviation consultant Nico Gurwicz explained that airlines now typically ask for a revenue guarantee when launching a route to a new destination, to protect against losses if demand falls short. The cost is being shared with the other Central American destination on the route.
Gurwicz said the potential economic impact for Belize could be between 5 and 10 million dollars in a single season, based on passenger numbers and visitor spending.
Mahler stressed that the route’s success depends on teamwork with the private sector. He said he has already urged the country’s top revenue generating properties to get creative and prepare packages for European visitors.
The seasonal service is set to begin December 16, 2027, with tickets on sale from December 21 this year.
