EUROPE’S TELECOM GIANTS EXPLORE SATELLITE CHALLENGE TO STARLINK

The proposed service would connect compatible mobile phones directly to satellites, extending coverage into areas conventional mobile towers cannot reach. The companies aim to strengthen network resilience, protect critical communications and expand access across Europe.

The operators would build ground infrastructure and establish coordination and monitoring functions in Europe, partnering with a satellite provider rather than investing directly in their own constellation.

The Financial Times describes the initiative as a challenge to Starlink amid growing transatlantic tensions. The strategic question is increasingly difficult to ignore: how much control should Europe have over the communications infrastructure its people, businesses and governments depend on?

For Ukraine, uncertainty surrounding satellite access has already demonstrated the consequences of dependence on decisions made elsewhere. That experience gives Europe’s push for greater communications independence an urgency that extends beyond commercial competition.

Combining the reach of four major operators with satellite technology could expand consumer choice while giving Europe a stronger role in governing vital connections.

Dependable communications are part of national security. Europe is taking steps to give itself more options—and greater control over its own future.
