By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-two-year-old Gian Teck, who pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl, appeared before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court on Thursday, October 22, where he pleaded for forgiveness and mercy ahead of his sentencing. Notably, this is Teck’s second offense for sex with a 14-year-old girl involving a minor in a separate incident.
“I just want to ask for forgiveness from the court. I didn’t know what I was doing at the moment. I want the court to consider me and have mercy on me,” Teck said during his mitigation hearing.
Teck was 18 years old when he engaged in sexual intercourse with the minor at his home on June 5, 2023. He initially denied the charge but changed his plea to guilty on October 1, on the fourth day of his trial, after the victim testified behind closed doors.
His attorney, Javier Williams, urged the court to impose a sentence at the lower end of the sentencing range, arguing that Teck was young and immature at the time of the offense and had no previous convictions.
Crown Counsel Kirk Brown, representing the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, argued that Teck should receive only a limited reduction in his sentence because his guilty plea came after the trial had already begun and the victim had been required to testify.
While both sides discussed a sentencing range of two to four years under the applicable sentencing guidelines, Brown maintained that the court should not impose a sentence below the five-year statutory minimum. The offense carries a prison term of five to ten years.
The prosecution also raised concerns about the possibility of Teck reoffending and requested that the court order counselling as part of his rehabilitation.
According to the agreed facts, the minor visited Teck’s home on June 5, 2023, where they engaged in sexual intercourse. During a subsequent police interview, Teck admitted having sexual intercourse with the girl on three occasions but claimed he believed she was 15 years old.
Teck had previously faced separate allegations involving another 14-year-old girl. However, that case was discontinued in January 2026 after the complainant declined to testify. Justice Candace Nanton explained at the time that the prosecution’s decision to enter a nolle prosequi did not amount to an acquittal and that the charges could be brought again.
Justice Pilgrim reserved his sentencing decision to consider the submissions made by both sides. Teck is scheduled to learn his fate on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
