The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will brief the media on the outcome of special vote applications ahead of the November 4 local government elections.
IEC chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo will lead the briefing at 1.10pm on Wednesday, which will also outline the commission’s readiness for election day.
The briefing follows the closure of special vote applications at 5pm on October 12.
Voters who will be unable to vote at their registered voting stations on election day were able to apply to cast their ballots ahead of the elections or request a home visit, depending on their circumstances.
“Special votes are meant to ensure access to the vote by persons who would otherwise not be able to participate in elections on 4 November 2026,” the IEC said in an earlier statement.
Approved special votes will take place on November 2 and 3, two days before the general voting process.
Voters who are physically unable to travel to their voting stations can apply for home visits by IEC officials, while those who can travel but will be unable to vote on election day can apply to cast their ballots at their registered voting stations before the election.
The November 4 elections will determine the composition of municipal councils across the country, with political parties and independent candidates contesting seats in eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 205 local municipalities.
