New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has been criticised after naming J.J. McCarthy as his starting quarterback ahead of Jameis Winston, with WFAN host Craig Carton declaring the team’s season effectively over.
The Giants have turned to McCarthy after Winston struggled with inconsistent performances, despite helping the team record two wins and a tie across his four starts.
McCarthy impressed after replacing Winston against the New Orleans Saints, throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. However, his limited experience has raised questions about whether Harbaugh has made the right call.
Craig Carton slams John Harbaugh for handing J.J. McCarthy the starting job
Carton did not hold back when discussing the Giants’ decision on WFAN, questioning the wisdom of starting a quarterback who has had limited opportunities this season.
“J.J. McCarthy era has begun for the Giants? Season over. What a ridiculously stupid decision by your hero, Johnny Harbaugh… a season in which you guys have a chance to win the division,” Carton said.
The radio host also pointed to the challenge McCarthy faces against the Houston Texans, whose defence he believes will be a difficult test for the young quarterback.
“Let’s take a kid who’s barely played football, only played essentially, a half of football this particular season, right? And put him up against a defense that’s arguably on paper the best defense in football. Oh, that couldn’t possibly go south on us. Your season ended today. My lord.”
Carton’s verdict was emphatic, but McCarthy’s performance against New Orleans offered the Giants reasons for optimism.
The former Minnesota Vikings quarterback has struggled to establish himself in the NFL, recording 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions across his 10 career starts. However, his late showing against the Saints suggests he could offer something different to the Giants’ offence.
Former New York sports writer Gary Myers also questioned the negative narrative surrounding McCarthy, arguing that Minnesota’s decision to move on from him does not automatically mean he cannot succeed elsewhere.
Winston, meanwhile, has accepted his reduced role, admitting: “I understand where I am now.”
The Giants have a short turnaround before facing Houston, leaving McCarthy little time to settle into his new role. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy will be crucial in helping the quarterback adapt, while the performance against the Texans should offer an early indication of whether Harbaugh’s decision can pay off.
