Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says no decision has been made on the future of the Black Stars’ interim technical team beyond the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 qualifier against Somalia.
Speaking on Akoma 87.9 FM, Asante Twum explained that the immediate task of the interim coaches is to prepare the national team for the Somalia encounter, with any decision on their future resting with the committee overseeing the search for a substantive head coach.
“The main job of the interim coaches is solely to focus on the game against Somalia. Whether they will continue afterwards, I cannot say at the moment because nobody knows what tomorrow holds. It will all depend on the committee,” he said.
The interim technical team is led by Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as assistants. Former Ghana international goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has also been appointed goalkeepers’ coach.
The appointments come amid growing pressure on the GFA to appoint a substantive head coach following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their opening matches, leaving them without a point in Group C and increasing calls for a change in direction.
Meanwhile, Asante Twum has dismissed suggestions that the GFA has already settled on a permanent head coach, attributing the speculation to the team’s recent performances.
“It is not true that the FA already has a coach. These comments are a result of the Black Stars’ current performance. If we were winning, such comments would not be coming up. We believe in the competence of the committee members to do a good job for Ghana,” he added.
The interim technical team is expected to lead Ghana in the November qualifier against Somalia as the Coach Search Committee continues its work to identify a substantive head coach.
