Kahbub – The Southern Giants Brigades announced on Monday that they had inflicted hundreds of casualties on the Houthis, forcing them to retreat on the Kahbub front in southwestern Yemen, following an attack launched by the group on their positions.
In a statement, the Giants Brigades said their forces repelled the Houthi attack, which they described as being carried out "in successive waves of fighters, during a fierce battle that lasted for hours and involved the use of various types of weapons."
The statement added that the clashes resulted in the destruction of Houthi military equipment and forced them to retreat.
Meanwhile, Yemeni sources reported that the Houthi group had made territorial gains on the Kahbub mountain fronts and in the Al-Mudharabah and Ras al-Arah districts, after the retreat of the Homeland Shield forces, which are part of the government forces.
The sources confirmed that soldiers from the Homeland Shield forces were taken prisoner by the Houthis, without specifying their number.
Kahbub is located in Lahj Governorate in southern Yemen and features a series of highlands overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait, giving it strategic importance.
In a related development, Yemeni sources reported that the Houthis targeted the city of Marib, which is under the control of government forces in central Yemen, with ballistic missiles.
Earlier on Monday, local authorities in Shabwa Governorate in southern Yemen revealed details of a deadly Houthi attack that killed dozens.
The local authority in Shabwa Governorate condemned "in the strongest terms the attack launched by the Houthi militias on Monday, during which the Martyr Ahmed al-Sulaimani Training Center was targeted with a number of ballistic missiles."
The Shabwa authorities stated that, according to initial statistics, the attack resulted in the deaths of more than 53 recruits and injuries to more than 200 others who were new recruits in the Internal Security Forces while receiving security training and qualification at the center.
In contrast, the Houthi group stated that its forces targeted the Al-Alam camp, which it claimed was "run by Saudi officers," according to its statement, asserting that "dozens were killed and wounded."
The group warned against responding to calls to recruit fighters for what it termed "death traps."
Shabwa is a province rich in energy resources, located in the middle of Yemen's southern coast, overlooking the Gulf of Aden. It is home to the Balhaf liquefied natural gas terminal, the largest industrial investment in the country.
Earlier this month, government forces launched an offensive aimed at retaking areas that had fallen under Houthi control and recapturing positions near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This comes as the group maintains a siege on Taiz, the last major urban stronghold of anti-Houthi forces in Yemen's southern highlands.
