AYER KEROH: Melaka Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh has been appointed the coalition's election director for the upcoming state polls.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in announcing this, said this was because the coalition's election director, deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan was busy with his duties as foreign minister.
"Before this it was Tok Mat (Mohamad) but as foreign minister, he is rather busy. By coincidence, while the campaigning for the Melaka election is ongoing, (Mohamad) will be overseas, including attending a meeting of the Commonwealth nations and the Asean Summit in Manila.
"So, I proposed (that Rauf takes over as BN's Melaka election director) and the meeting earlier endorsed this... no one else, just him (Rauf)," he said after chairing the BN central committee meeting for the 16th Melaka election.
Meanwhile, Rauf, who is also Melaka caretaker chief minister, said he appreciated the trust placed on him to be the election director.
He said he and the party's leadership team would fulfil their responsibilities to the best of their ability.
"At the meeting earlier, we reached agreement on many matters, including coordinating the duties and responsibilities of 'mentors' and BN component parties in supporting election campaign efforts in Melaka.
"I hope this mutual understanding will provide us with a good opportunity to achieve our goal of ensuring that this Melaka election reflects a united front through collective cooperation," he said.
