For the second back-to-back week, the Washington Commanders failed to secure a win despite remaining competitive in their matchup. Jayden Daniels’ fourth-down blunder in the loss to the San Francisco 49ers was particularly notable, and head coach Dan Quinn also had a message for the Commanders quarterback following the game.
When asked about Daniels’ fourth-down mistake, Quinn revealed what he told his quarterback about the costly decision.
“Even when you know there’s a penalty, you still take your shot to throw. You don’t know if it will get picked up,” Quinn said.

The incident took place in the second quarter, with Washington trailing 13-3 and facing fourth-and-2 at the San Francisco 13-yard line. The Commanders elected to go for it, hoping to narrow the deficit with a potential touchdown. However, as Daniels rolled out of the pocket under pressure, he threw the ball out of bounds rather than attempting a pass to one of his receivers.
A flag was thrown during the play, seemingly creating confusion for Daniels. The quarterback later explained that he was unsure whether the penalty had been called against San Francisco or Washington. Nevertheless, he admitted his mistake and accepted responsibility for his execution, regardless of the officials’ decision.
“I just gotta execute better in that situation regardless of a flag or not,” Daniels said.
Daniels finished the game completing 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. Although his passing numbers reflected a productive performance, Washington’s inability to capitalize on crucial opportunities ultimately proved costly as the team fell to 1-4-1.
The fourth-down mistake was particularly concerning because it came just one week after Washington experienced another costly clock-management blunder against the New York Giants.
With their struggles continuing, the Commanders have now gone 0-7-1 in Daniels’ last eight starts. The consecutive disappointing losses leave Washington facing difficult questions to address during its bye week.
