Coventry, Oct 13: Coventry City produced a stunning performance to defeat Newcastle United 4-1 at the CBS Arena, securing their first home victory in the Premier League in 25 years and climbing out of the relegation zone.
Jack Rudoni, teenage forward Sidiki Cherif, substitute Ellis Simms and 18-year-old Stephen Mfuni scored for Frank Lampard’s side on Monday night, as Coventry registered their second victory of the season and moved up to 14th in the standings, level on points with Manchester United.
Newcastle, meanwhile, suffered another setback in their attempts to establish themselves under manager Matthias Jaissle. The Magpies remained 11th with eight points from their opening six matches, after a disappointing display that exposed their defensive vulnerabilities and wastefulness in front of goal. The result also ended Coventry’s long wait for a Premier League goal at their home ground. Their previous strike in the competition at the venue had come through John Hartson in a 1-0 victory over Sunderland in April 2001.Coventry made an ideal start when Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Cherif inside the penalty area after coming under pressure from Ephron Mason-Clark. Referee John Brooks pointed to the spot, and Rudoni calmly converted to give the hosts an early lead and send the home supporters into celebration.
The goal was particularly significant for Lampard’s team, who had managed only one strike in their opening five league matches. Having struggled to find their attacking rhythm, Coventry suddenly had the confidence and momentum to take the game to their opponents.
Newcastle responded by increasing the pressure and created opportunities to draw level before the interval. However, Coventry defender Bobby Thomas proved instrumental in preserving his side’s advantage, producing two important blocks to deny Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
Fernandez-Pardo missed another promising opportunity when he failed to make contact with Jacob Murphy’s pass in front of goal, allowing Coventry to reach half-time with their narrow lead intact. The hosts wasted little time extending their advantage after the restart. Just three minutes into the second half, Cherif found the net with a composed finish to make it 2-0 and leave Newcastle facing an uphill task. The teenager, who had already won the penalty for the opening goal, demonstrated his attacking threat by making the most of the space afforded to him by the visitors’ defence. His goal gave Coventry greater control of the contest and energised a home crowd that had waited years to witness such a performance in the Premier League.Newcastle attempted to respond, but their defensive organisation continued to falter. Coventry exploited the gaps in the visitors’ backline, while the Magpies struggled to turn their possession and attacking pressure into meaningful results.Sven Botman briefly revived Newcastle’s hopes with a spectacular long-range strike in the 70th minute. The defender unleashed a powerful effort from distance that found the net, reducing the deficit to 2-1 and setting up what appeared to be a potentially tense final period. However, Coventry quickly restored their two-goal cushion. Substitute Ellis Simms scored after referee Brooks allowed play to continue despite Joelinton’s challenge on Brandon Thomas-Asante near the edge of the penalty area. Simms’ effort took a deflection on its way past Hornicek, making it 3-1 and putting the hosts firmly in control. The goal underlined Newcastle’s problems at both ends of the pitch. While Botman’s strike had offered the visitors a way back into the match, they were unable to contain Coventry’s attacking threat or build on their brief revival.Mfuni then delivered the standout moment of the evening with four minutes of normal time remaining. The 18-year-old defender advanced into the penalty area before curling a superb effort beyond Hornicek and into the top-right corner, completing a memorable performance for the hosts. (Agencies)
