This week, several videos captured one of the most striking scenes along the California coast: enormous waves slammed into an Amtrak passenger train as it traveled alongside the Pacific Ocean, covering its cars in sea foam. The footage quickly raised questions about what caused the powerful surf and how it relates to a Super Niño.

What does the Super Niño have to do with the huge waves?
Super Niño could play a role in what is happening across the Pacific. The phenomenon is characterized by unusually intense warming of surface waters, which can alter weather patterns and change storm activity in different regions.
When these changes affect ocean conditions, waves can grow stronger and reach exposed stretches of coastline. In San Clemente, California, the railroad tracks run alongside the shore, allowing waves to reach the rail infrastructure directly.
Why does the surf pose a risk to the tracks?
The danger does not end when the water recedes. Powerful waves can erode the ground and wash away the materials supporting the tracks, compromising the stability of the rail line and potentially disrupting train service.
With Super Niño conditions still a concern, changes in the Pacific will be key to understanding what could happen along the California coast in the coming months, particularly in areas where powerful surf threatens infrastructure built along the shoreline.
