The Talladega Superspeedway is one of NASCAR’s most thrilling racetracks. Between the bumper-to-bumper pack racing, the high speeds, and the constant threat of “The Big One,” races at the 2.66-mile track keeps fans on the edges of their seats.
As exciting as Talladega races are, there is an element of danger that comes with it. Here, we will look at why NASCAR races at Talladega are dangerous.
Talladega Pack Racing Often Leads to Chaos
The pack racing at Talladega can be a thrill to watch. Cars are racing side-by-side, inches apart, and are constantly bumping into the back of the car in front of them in order to maintain a high speed and push towards the front of the field.
With that, however, comes a danger factor. Because the cars are running inches apart at over 190 miles per hour, it is not a question of if a major crash will occur, it is when.
Rarely does the NASCAR Cup Series go through a 188-lap race without “The Big One,” a widely-used NASCAR term to describe a massive, multiple-car crash.
Because of the high speeds, there is the threat of a car going upside down and flipping, which has happened at Talladega more times than can be counted for.
Racing at Talladega is exciting for the fans, but that joy can come with the cost of a massive crash. Fortunately, with the major safety developments over the last 25 years, no NASCAR driver has been killed in a crash since Dale Earnhardt in 2001.
NASCAR Set For Tripleheader Weekend at Talladega
The NASCAR circuit heads to the Talladega Superspeedway for what is sure to be a fun-filled weekend of action. For NASCAR’s top three series, there are only three races remaining in the 2026 season.
The Craftsman Truck Series will kick off the weekend of action on Friday with the running of the Love’s RV Stop 225. On Saturday, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series takes to the track for The Progress Group 250.
The race weekend will conclude on Sunday with the Cup Series race, the YellaWood 500.
For the Truck Series, TV coverage can be found on FS1. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race can be found on The CW, and the Cup Series race can be watched on NBC.
The Cup Series race is expected to be an interesting one. With three races left in the 2026 season, the top seven drivers in the standings are within one race worth of points of each other.
