KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) will explore renewable energy, energy efficiency and electrical reliability solutions for rail infrastructure.
This will begin with the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project.
The collaboration will initially focus on the Bukit Chagar Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ) Complex and Wadi Hana Depot.
The two organisations will assess opportunities to integrate renewable energy, improve energy efficiency and strengthen electrical infrastructure reliability.
The partnership was formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) exchanged at Transport Expo Asia 2026 here today.
The agreement builds on their existing working relationship across the MRT1, MRT2, Penang Mutiara Line and RTS Link projects.
The MoU was exchanged between MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim and TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Ir Ts Shamsul Ahmad, witnessed by Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook.
The agreement outlines three areas of collaboration, including solar energy solutions, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and electrical reliability and maintenance services.
Under the first area, both parties will explore the development and deployment of renewable energy systems at suitable premises and assets.
This is alongside energy-saving initiatives to reduce electricity consumption and operating costs.
The second area involves potentially introducing EV charging facilities at selected MRT Corp premises.
The organisations will explore how charging infrastructure could complement public transport facilities and encourage more sustainable mobility.
The third area focuses on improving the safety, reliability and operational resilience of electrical systems and generator sets supporting critical rail facilities.
MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said the collaboration will support the corporation's transition from infrastructure development towards the efficient and sustainable operation of its assets.
"As MRT Corp takes on the responsibility of operating Wadi Hana Depot, the ICQ Complex and RTS Station at Bukit Chagar, our priorities extend beyond infrastructure delivery to ensuring these facilities are managed efficiently, reliably and sustainably.
"Our longstanding working relationship with TNB has been instrumental in supporting the delivery of our rail projects.
"We are now taking that relationship to a more strategic level, bringing TNB's energy expertise into how we operate and manage these critical facilities.
"This will allow us to explore practical solutions that improve energy efficiency, strengthen operational resilience and ensure our sustainability commitments translate into measurable benefits throughout the operational life of our assets," he said in a statement.
TNB's Shamsul said the collaboration reflected the importance of integrating sustainable energy solutions into the development and operation of critical infrastructure, in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
"Reliable electricity is fundamental to the effective operation of public transport infrastructure.
"Beyond the initial focus on the RTS Link, the MoU provides a framework for both organisations to explore further opportunities where energy solutions can create value for infrastructure operations," he said.
The partnership aligns with TNB's efforts to advance Malaysia's energy transition through grid modernisation, renewable energy integration and more efficient energy solutions.
