Brandon's passion for aviation started at a young age. He became involved in the flight simulator and VATSIM communities, which sparked his interest in aviation and eventually led him to earn his private pilot license. Outside of work, he continues to build flight hours, explore new airports, and stay involved in the aviation community.
Lufthansa flew its final Airbus A340-600 passenger service on October 18, when LH419 departed Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and landed at Frankfurt Airport(FRA) the following morning. The flight ended 23 years of operations for the airline, which owned 24 of the 97 ever built. It also removed the last scheduled A340-600 service anywhere in Europe or North America.
The aircraft is not gone yet, but the map of where to find one has narrowed sharply. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is now the only airport in the world with two A340 operators based at it, with SWISS International Air Lines flying three active examples and Edelweiss Air five. Frankfurt keeps nearly a dozen Lufthansa A340-300s into 2027. Beyond that, scheduled A340-600 service continues at just two carriers, Mahan Air in Tehran and Conviasa in Caracas, both operating under sanctions that make the aircraft difficult to board and equally difficult to replace.
Lufthansa's Exit Changed Where You Can Find One
Lufthansa operated its final Airbus A340-600 passenger flight October 18. LH419 departed Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and landed at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) the following morning, closing 23 years of service with the type. The carrier had taken delivery of 24 A340-600s between 2003 and 2008, and only four were still flying in the final months. Anyone tracking the type's remaining operators can follow them on Simple Flying's Live Flight Tracker.
The aircraft held the title of the world's longest passenger jet until the Boeing 747-8 entered service. Lufthansa configured its examples with 281 seats across four cabins, a figure a modern twinjet handles comfortably, which is the core of why the type is disappearing. The airline planned to retire the fleet at the start of the pandemic but kept it flying instead after delivery delays to the Boeing 777X, Airbus A350, and Boeing 787 left gaps in the long-haul schedule that needed filling.
The retirement narrows the map considerably. One Mile At A Time reported that scheduled A340-600 service is now confined to Venezuela's Conviasa and Iran's Mahan Air. Both operate in countries where sanctions complicate fleet renewal, and neither is straightforward for most travelers to book. For anyone hoping to fly or photograph the type, the question is no longer where the A340 is most common. It is where any of them are left.
Zurich Is Now The Best Place To Look
Zurich Airport (ZRH) now offers more chances to find an Airbus A340 than anywhere else most travelers can reach. Two Lufthansa Group carriers operate the type from the airport. SWISS has three active A340-300s with a fourth parked. Edelweiss Air, the group's Swiss leisure carrier, operates five. Travel-Dealz reported that Edelweiss serves twelve destinations with the type in 2026, making it the second-largest A340 operator by destinations served after Lufthansa.
The two fleets are connected in more than ownership. Some Edelweiss aircraft are loaned from SWISS, and Edelweiss operates the Zurich to Montreal route on behalf of SWISS under a wet-lease arrangement, meaning a passenger booking through SWISS boards an Edelweiss aircraft. The practical consequence for anyone chasing the type is that the Edelweiss schedule offers considerably more chances than the SWISS one despite both fleets being similar in size.
Neither operation has long to run. SWISS has confirmed its remaining A340-300s will be gone by early 2028, with Shanghai Pudong and Johannesburg both moving to the A350-900 across the winter 2026/27 timetable. Edelweiss is replacing its five aircraft with six A350-900s and ferried the first A340 to storage at Teruel in October 2025. One further opportunity arrives shortly. Dubai International Airport (DXB) returns to the SWISS network on October 27, with the daily Zurich service planned to be operated mainly by the A340-300 through the winter season.
Frankfurt Still Has The A340-300 Through 2027
Lufthansa's A340 story did not end on October 18. InsideFlyer reported that nearly a dozen A340-300s remain in the fleet and are expected to be retired during 2027. Frankfurt is where to find them, so the airport that just lost the world's longest passenger jet is still one of the best places to see a four-engine Airbus operating a scheduled passenger service.
The A340-300 is the shorter, older variant, and Lufthansa has flown it considerably longer than the -600 ever did. The aircraft still flying are among the oldest widebodies in regular European service. They fly only because the replacements ordered to succeed them arrived late, the same reason the -600 outlasted its original retirement date.
That delay explains the whole timeline. Lufthansa intended to retire its A340 fleet when the pandemic began, as demand collapsed and the economics of a four-engine widebody became difficult to defend. Delivery delays to the Boeing 777X, the Airbus A350, and the Boeing 787 left the airline without replacement capacity, so the A340 stayed in service several years longer than planned. Those deliveries are now arriving, with Lufthansa's first A350-1000s due from this month. Frankfurt loses its last A340 in 2027, leaving one question for anyone chasing the type beyond that point.
The -600 Now Survives Only In Tehran And Caracas
Two airlines continue to operate the A340-600 on scheduled passenger service. Mahan Air flies from Tehran and Conviasa from Caracas, and between them they hold what is left of the variant in regular use. Neither is straightforward to reach. Mahan Air is subject to long-standing international sanctions, and Travel-Dealz noted that obtaining a ticket with the airline may be difficult.
Mahan Air is the more interesting of the two for anyone cataloging variants. The carrier operates the A340-300 and A340-600, and Travel-Dealz reported that it also still flies the A340-200, a short-fuselage version Airbus produced in small numbers, which Mahan uses occasionally. Few airlines anywhere have flown that variant in recent years, and fewer still operate it alongside the two later ones.
These aircraft survive for the same reason they are hard to board. Sanctions that restrict access to Western aircraft and parts also remove pressure to retire older types because no straightforward replacement exists. Travel-Dealz observed that the A340s may therefore remain in service long term. Conviasa operates under comparable constraints in Venezuela. The commercial case that is clearing the A340 out of European fleets, where newer twinjets cut fuel burn substantially on the same routes, does not apply to an airline that cannot buy a newer twinjet at any price.
What Remains After 2027
The A340's European presence has a defined end date. Lufthansa's remaining A340-300s are expected to leave the fleet during 2027. SWISS will retire its last aircraft by early 2028, with its two long-haul A340 routes moving to the A350-900 across the winter 2026/27 timetable. Edelweiss is completing its replacement with six A350-900s. When that is finished, scheduled A340 passenger service in Western Europe ends.
What survives afterward sits largely outside the markets most readers can book. Mahan Air and Conviasa will hold the remaining aircraft, and both operate under sanctions regimes that make ticketing difficult and fleet renewal nearly impossible. Those same conditions are what keep the aircraft flying. An airline that cannot buy an A350 has no reason to retire an A340, so the type's final years will likely be spent in the places it is hardest to reach rather than where it was most common.
For anyone wanting to fly one, the window is measured in months rather than years. Zurich offers the most options, with SWISS and Edelweiss both operating from the airport and the Dubai route running on the A340-300 through the coming winter. Frankfurt keeps the A340-300 into 2027. At least one aircraft will outlast the fleet in a different form: SWISS and the Swiss Museum of Transport announced in September that the airline's final A340-300 will be preserved as a permanent exhibit in Lucerne, with the airframe due to arrive by early 2028.
