Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley could face a significant NFL fine after his controversial tackle on Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce during their 22-6 defeat.
The incident has attracted attention after Kelce appeared to tweak his ankle during the play. The veteran tight end briefly left the game before returning, easing concerns among Chiefs supporters.
However, the tackle has continued to generate debate, with questions being raised over whether Henley used an illegal hip-drop technique.
Daiyan Henley could face NFL fine for Travis Kelce tackle
Clips of the tackle have circulated online, with Chiefs fans and analysts questioning the legality of Henley’s challenge.
The NFL prohibits hip-drop tackles because of the injury risk involved. The banned technique involves a defender unweighting their body, swivelling their hips and dropping onto a ball carrier’s legs to bring them down.
The play involving Kelce has prompted scrutiny over whether Henley’s tackle met those criteria. However, the league has not officially confirmed that it is investigating the incident or announced any disciplinary action.
If the NFL determines that Henley committed an illegal hip-drop tackle, he could face a five-figure penalty.
According to the league’s official website, the baseline fine for a first offence is $17,911, rising to $23,882 for repeat violations.
Those figures mean the Chargers linebacker could face a costly consequence if the league rules against him. However, any potential punishment remains unconfirmed.
Kelce’s brief absence from the game also raised concerns for Kansas City, given his importance to the Chiefs’ offence. He was able to return, while head coach Andy Reid offered a reassuring update after the victory.
Reid indicated that Kelce might be sore but said he would “be ok”.
The Chiefs will now hope their tight end avoids any lingering problems as they continue their unbeaten start to the season. Meanwhile, the Chargers remain winless after six games, adding to the pressure following another defeat.
Henley’s situation will depend on the NFL’s review and whether the league determines that the tackle breached its rules. Until an official decision is announced, a fine remains a possibility rather than a confirmed punishment.
