Q&A: Is Scotland’s mid-career workforce drowning in financial stress?

Alison Pearson from Acumen Employee Benefits looks at why mid-career professionals might find themselves with less financial breathing space despite higher salaries - and how employers can do to help.

Q: Is Scotland’s Mid-Career Workforce Quietly Drowning in Financial Stress?

A: Mid-career is often seen as a time of financial stability. Careers are established, earnings may be higher and retirement still feels some way off.

Yet for many Scots aged 35 to 55, the reality is different. Despite earning more, they may have less financial breathing space than ever.

Mortgages, childcare, rising household costs and caring for ageing parents can create competing demands, while the pressure to save and prepare for retirement continues.

According to the Money and Pensions Service’s MoneyView Scotland report, over 60% of those aged 35–54 say money worries affect their mental health, while one in three regularly lose sleep over their finances.

But financial stress is not always easy to admit.

There is an unspoken expectation that by mid-career, people should have their finances figured out. Admitting otherwise can feel like failure, particularly among experienced professionals who are used to being relied upon.

Behind the scenes, financial uncertainty can affect confidence, concentration and emotional wellbeing. Yet fear of judgement often prevents people from seeking help, leaving concerns to build rather than be addressed.

For employers, the challenge is not simply recognising financial stress, but creating an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing it.

Normalising conversations about money, offering accessible education and providing opportunities to ask questions without judgement can make a meaningful difference.

Often, employees don't need complicated financial solutions. They need reassurance, clarity and a better understanding of their options.

Acumen offers complimentary financial wellbeing sessions, delivered by Financial Planners who make financial topics practical, straightforward and jargon-free. These no-obligation sessions help employees ask questions, understand their options and feel more confident about their financial decisions.

As one employee shared: “Reassuring, easy to understand, and confidence-boosting… Many of us went home and took action straight away.”

For employers, supporting financial wellbeing is about more than financial education. It's about recognising the pressures employees face and helping remove the stigma surrounding money worries.

Because making it easier to talk about money could be the first step towards a more financially confident workforce.
