Pat Kelsey set the stakes for his third season at the helm of Louisville basketball when he assembled reportedly one of the most expensive rosters in the country.
Fresh off their first NCAA Tournament win since 2017, the Cardinals must reassert themselves as a perennial contender. A coach who is 2-13 vs. Quad 1A opponents at UofL and has never in his career advanced past the second round of March Madness must deliver the deep postseason run that has eluded the program since 2015.
"I'm crystal clear of the expectations here," Kelsey told reporters Oct. 8.
"Everybody said, 'The criticism is going to be harsher and bigger,'" he later added. "That's fair. That's totally fair."
The problem with expectations is: The more you think about them, the more likely you are to, as Kelsey put it, "screw up what's right in front of you." That's why he's been working so hard to get his players committed to a process that's produced 51 wins over the past two seasons.
"Walking in the gym every day, you can totally feel that energy and that connection between everybody in the program," said senior guard Jackson Shelstad, one of the 11 new faces on Louisville's roster.
So far, so good — it seems. But, as new associate head coach John Andrzejek noted, "We haven't been punched in the mouth yet." The fists will start flying at 7 p.m. Oct. 21, when the Cards tip off their first preseason exhibition against Kansas inside Allen Fieldhouse.
Until then, ponder these three questions — three of the biggest facing UofL as it enters 2026-27:
How will Seth Trimble's eligibility battle end?
This much was certain about Seth Trimble's fight for a fifth season as of Oct. 13:
- The former North Carolina guard was not eligible, but Kelsey was "operating every day" as if he will be.
- An evidentiary hearing was set for Oct. 14 in the lawsuit he and more than three dozen other Class of 2022 athletes filed against the NCAA's new age-based eligibility model.
- The Jefferson County Circuit Court judge presiding over the case, Brian Edwards, sided with the athletes in August — granting a temporary restraining order that was dissolved Oct. 2 by a panel of three judges from the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
Let's say Edwards backs Trimble & Co. again by issuing a preliminary injunction after the evidentiary hearing. That would mean he can suit up for Louisville — but the NCAA would, in all likelihood, ask the Kentucky Court of Appeals to weigh in for a second time.
How will the back-and-forth battle end? Kelsey has taken to saying, "Your guess is as good as mine."
"I'm not really worried about what's to come," Trimble told reporters Oct. 8. "I can't stress and harp on something that I can't control."
It's not that the Cards would be completely lost without Trimble. Kelsey's collection of newcomers was ranked among the top five on 247Sports' national leaderboard long before the 6-foot-3 native of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, entered the picture. But there's no debating his presence would change the complexion of the team.
We're talking about a lead guard with four years of ACC experience — a surefire starter who could take some pressure off of Shelstad. And, most important ...
"He's one of the best on-ball defenders in the country," Shelstad said.
"He's one of those guys that you've got to prepare for and you've got to find ways to make sure that he's not on the ball," new associate head coach Sean Dixon added.
Sounds like a huge piece of the puzzle, no? Especially when you consider UofL would be down to only three upperclassmen guards without Trimble: Shelstad, fellow senior De'Shayne Montgomery and junior Adrian Wooley. Kelsey could really use the depth and the lineup flexibility the former Tar Heels standout offers.
Will Obinna Ekezie Jr. emerge as a breakout freshman?
There's no question Louisville's frontcourt will be a strength after Kelsey signed former Kansas forward Flory Bidunga, the reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Whether the Cards can contend for a championship could hinge on the progression of Obinna Ekezie Jr., a 7-2 freshman who arrived on campus as the top center in the Class of 2026 on the 247Sports Composite.
"He's going to be really special," Bidunga said.
Two important caveats:
- Ekezie reclassified to begin his college career a year ahead of schedule.
- The 18-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, underwent surgery on his right shoulder at the end of his junior season at Southeastern Preparatory Academy in Orlando. He wasn't cleared to run the court at full speed/contact with the rest of UofL's scholarship players until Oct. 7.
"I don't want to say (I'm going to) temper my expectations initially," Kelsey said. "We've just got to give him time to get in a groove, get accustomed, get confident. It's just going to take a little bit."
Ekezie does not want to be defined by his age or his surgery. "I'm here right now," he said. "I have to perform."
That's not just talk. Since joining Louisville, Ekezie has bulked up (from 230 to 248 pounds) and improved his standing vertical jump (from 27.5 to 31.5 inches) and his approach vertical jump (from 33 to 36 inches). Andrzejek has called him a "biomechanical marvel" — an NBA-caliber athlete with mobility, strength and wingspan to boot.
Ekezie has been lining up opposite Bidunga in practice, with the 6-9 junior serving as his mentor. "I don't think you can get that kind of experience anywhere else," the freshman said. "Being able to do that every day is great."
There's a good chance Ekezie will start the season as Bidunga's backup, considering Kelsey wants to ensure he's properly acclimated. But, for the Cards to reach their full potential in 2026-27, he must make good on his five-star status and emerge as a key contributor who's in contention for the ACC's All-Rookie team come March.
If UofL wants to become the kind of team that gave it fits during Kelsey's first two seasons, the more Ekezie and Bidunga can share the court, the better.
How will Pat Kelsey adapt his offense to Louisville basketball's overhauled roster?
Yes, Kelsey was intentional about bolstering Louisville's length and rim protection this offseason. He needed to be after the Cards combined to go -27 in second-chance points, -35 in total rebounds and -58 in paint scoring across 10 games against Quad 1A opponents in 2025-26.
"You've got to be able to meet fire with fire," Kelsey said.
If you were wondering whether that means a major stylistic shift is on the horizon, the coach shot down that notion during ACC Tipoff, when he said: "We still want to be able to maintain being that potent, fast-paced, downhill offense that we've always been."
"We want to generate great shots," Kelsey continued. "That's generating free throws, shots at the rim, rhythm 3s and then crashing the glass and getting extra shots. ... We didn't compromise on our ability to score the ball."
Still, UofL is bound to look at least a little bit different in 2026-27, with only one scholarship player returning from the year prior. That begs the question: How will Kelsey adapt his offense to get the most out of his overhauled roster?
Taking fewer 3s is the most obvious answer. Without a marksman of Ryan Conwell and Isaac McKneely's caliber, it feels safe to say Louisville will fall short of last year's 52.9% 3-point attempt rate, which ranked fourth in the country and produced a 36% clip (406 for 1,127). That's OK as long as the Cards can pose enough of a threat from beyond the arc to create opportunities at the rim, where eight of their nine Division I veterans shot 63.6% or better in 2025-26.
It's also important to keep in mind that Kelsey's teams have finished among the top 70 in 3-point attempt rate in 12 of his 14 seasons as a head coach, and he believes there's "enough shooting" on this roster. There might not be a big drop-off in volume after last year's approach led to a 59.4% field-goal percentage from 2 on an average attempt distance of 4.7 feet from the basket. Both marks ranked among the top 20 nationally.
"Jackson Shelstad is a very good shooter; Adrian Wooley is a very good shooter," Kelsey said. "You've got Karter Knox, Alvaro Folgueiras; De'Shayne (Montgomery) can make a 3. I'm not worried about that at all."
The teams that have had UofL's number under Kelsey imposed their will defensively, disrupting the rhythm it relies on to generate the type of shots the coach values most. This year is for proving he's learned from those losses how to avoid stagnant stretches with a more balanced attack.
"Everybody on our team is super unselfish, so I don't think we're going to have an issue with bad shot selection; we're going to try to be really aggressive and get the right shots," Shelstad said. "If the 3 ball is there, we're going to shoot it. We've got a lot of good shooters, but we're just going to take what the defense gives us and play super aggressive."
