A CPI(M) local committee secretary has lodged a complaint with the Srinagar police outpost, seeking registration of a case over obscene and sexually explicit photographs posted by a Facebook user in response to a post by Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury.
In his complaint, Ranjit Bhowmik, secretary of the CPI(M)'s Srinagar local committee, alleged that a Facebook user identified as Amit Debnath uploaded two photographs containing sexually explicit content and derogatory material targeting Chaudhury.
According to the complaint, Chaudhury, who is the CPI(M) state secretary and a member of the party's Politburo, had posted a Bengali-language message on Facebook on October 23, 2026, questioning the circumstances in which youths were allegedly being jailed for hoisting the national flag.
The post triggered several comments, including political remarks, the complainant said. However, Bhowmik alleged that the user operating the Facebook account named 'Amit Debnath' posted two photographs that were obscene and sexually explicit in nature.
The complainant alleged that the photographs were uploaded intentionally to malign Chaudhury and damage his reputation, dignity and goodwill. He claimed that the alleged act attracted Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, which deals with the publication or transmission of material containing sexually explicit acts or conduct in electronic form.
Bhowmik urged the police to register a specific case against the person concerned and conduct an investigation in accordance with the law. He also sought action against the accused if the allegations were established.
The complaint was accompanied by screenshots of Chaudhury's Facebook post dated October 23, a screenshot of the Facebook account allegedly operated by Amit Debnath and screenshots of the two photographs in question.
Bhowmik stated that he had captured all the screenshots using his mobile phone and would provide details of the device if required by the police.
