Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed that his administration will unravel the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 10 persons in a boat mishap in Kula Community, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state.
Fubara gave the assurance on Thursday when members of the Kula Community staged a peaceful march to the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Sunny Ewule, sympathised with the bereaved families and appealed to the people to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
He assured the people of Kula that anyone allegedly involved in the incident that led to the deaths of their kinsmen would face the full wrath of the law.
According to the governor, the loss of life was a serious matter, adding that the state government would not rest until it got to the bottom of the incident.
He stated, “We want to sympathise with the Kula Community and the bereaved families. Anybody who is involved in this incident or found culpable for whatever happened will definitely pay for it according to the law.
“We are not going to sit by and allow Rivers indigenes go through this type of unnecessary death.”
Earlier, the leader of the Kula Community delegation, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, said they were at the Government House to formally complain about the incident and seek the intervention of the state government.
Sara-Igbe stated, “It is proper we inform him (Fubara) because we don’t want to take the law into our hands. We have the capacity to react, but we don’t want to react.”
Meanwhile, five bodies have so far been recovered from the incident, according to Sara-Igbe.
In a short message sent to our correspondent on Thursday, he said, “Five of the recovered corpses from the Robertkiri OML 25 incident will be taken to Rivers State Government House between 3.45 pm and 5 pm today and thereafter to the headquarters of the Rivers State Police Command, Port Harcourt.”
