Leeds United have spent years trying to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level, but the club’s history includes difficult decisions involving players who grew up at Thorp Arch. For academy graduates, reaching the first team can represent years of work, sacrifice and patience. Leaving that environment, especially without having planned an exit, can be difficult to accept.
Ronaldo Vieira experienced that uncertainty in 2018. The midfielder had progressed through Leeds’ academy and earned his chance with the senior side, yet his future changed when the club decided to sell him. Looking back, the Guinea-Bissau international admits that the news left him struggling to process what came next.
Speaking to GianlucaDiMarzio.com, Vieira recalled feeling “scared and sad” because he believed he remained part of Leeds’ plans. After leaving the stadium with his family, he drove alone to think about the situation.
His agent explained that he did not have to accept Sampdoria’s offer. However, Vieira eventually agreed to the move because he believed the transfer would help Leeds financially. Within two days, he had arrived in Genoa to begin a new chapter in Serie A.
“My agent explained to me that I wasn’t obligated to accept [Sampdoria’s offer]. I thought about it and said, ‘If it helps Leeds, I’ll do it.’ I was going to Serie A, to a big team. Two days later, I was in Genoa.”
He said: “I was a normal boy who wanted to play football and was waiting for his opportunity. When I joined the academy, I knew I had to work twice as hard as everyone else.
“After a year, I managed to make my debut with the first team: I only played seven minutes, but playing in front of that packed stadium was incredible.”
He said: “At the moment, I’m happy here. I have a contract here, so as long as they want me, I will be here, and then you never know what can happen in the future.
“I have a house in England and my family’s in England, my brother’s in England, my mum, my whole family’s in England.
“If there was a chance to come back to England, of course I would think about it and I would make a decision with everything else. I would just be aware of different things, but I’d be very open to it.”
From Thorp Arch to Italian football
Vieira’s departure brought an end to an important stage of his development. The midfielder had joined Leeds as a young player and worked hard for his opportunity, eventually making his senior debut in front of a packed Elland Road crowd.
Although that first appearance lasted just seven minutes, he remembers the occasion fondly. The experience gave him a glimpse of what playing for Leeds meant to supporters, and his affection for the club has endured despite the circumstances surrounding his exit.
The 27-year-old subsequently spent several years in Italian football before moving to Major League Soccer, where he now represents San Jose Earthquakes. Earlier this year, he told The Yorkshire Post that he remains happy in California, although he would consider returning to England if the right opportunity arose.
His family connections make that possibility particularly meaningful. Vieira still has a house in England, while his mother, brother and other relatives remain there.
Meanwhile, Leeds have collected 10 points from seven Premier League matches in 2026/27, recording two wins, four draws and one defeat. Daniel Farke’s side have scored nine goals and conceded six, giving them a record of seventh place in the early standings.
How should Leeds balance financial demands with academy loyalty?

Vieira’s departure illustrates the difficult balance between football finances and the personal welfare of young players. Leeds reportedly received around £6.2 million from Sampdoria for the midfielder, although the exact final terms would require confirmation. At the time, the club needed resources to support their wider ambitions, and selling a promising academy graduate offered one route towards that goal.
However, the player’s recollection raises a question about how clubs communicate decisions of this kind. A transfer can make financial sense without making the experience any easier for the individual involved. Leeds must therefore ensure that young players receive clear explanations, proper support and enough time to consider major career decisions.
Vieira’s willingness to accept the move for the club’s benefit shows how strongly he identified with Leeds. That connection deserves recognition, especially when academy graduates help the club through difficult financial periods.
The Whites cannot promise every young player a permanent place in the senior squad, nor should sentiment dictate transfer policy. Yet they can handle departures with greater care, maintain relationships after players leave and make former graduates feel welcome at Elland Road. Vieira’s story offers a clear reminder that a transfer fee measures a player’s market value, not what the club means to him.
