As temperatures drop and autumn settles in, it’s the ideal time to explore European cities which seem made for cosy escapes. Think winding cobbled streets, historic cafés and canals lined with colourful leaves.
Now, a new study of Reddit discussions has revealed the continent’s cosiest destinations for autumn 2026, with Bruges taking the top spot.
Amsterdam and Prague follow closely, but the ranking also features some surprising destinations you might not expect – like sunny Lisbon and Athens.
The study, by UK-based holiday home letting agency Big House Experience, looked at cities within continental Europe (and outside of the UK), and analysed Reddit discussions before ranking the destinations according to the number of upvotes they received.
These are the cities to visit to feel the snuggest as it gets chillier and the “-ber” months continue.
Which European cities are the cosiest?
Picture a cosy city, and Bruges will probably come straight to mind, with its cobblestone streets, fairytale-esque medieval architecture and picturesque canals. It’s little surprise, then, that the Belgian city topped this ranking, with more than 15,000 upvotes across relevant Reddit content.
World-famous for its historic buildings and, of course, chocolate shops and quaint cafés, Bruges is the ideal spot for a truly cosy trip. Be sure to wander through the winding streets, which have a real old-world feel, or duck inside a comfy eaterie for a Belgian hot chocolate.
Following closely behind Bruges is Amsterdam, which got 14,477 upvotes. Over the border from Belgium, the Dutch capital boasts historic canal houses, independent coffee shops and tree-lined waterways, which turn beautiful shades of red and orange come autumn.
While Amsterdam is a great city to visit year-round, it’s especially cosy in the chillier months, when hearty dishes are on the menu. Don’t miss the chance to try poffertjes, either. These fluffy, miniature puffy pancakes are served hot with a melting pat of butter and a dusting of powdered sugar and make the perfect autumn treat.
Next up in the ranking are Prague and Kraków, with Reddit upvote scores of 11,098 and 10,117, respectively.
Both of these Central European cities are well known for their historic architecture and atmospheric – and, yes, cosy – old towns, which are home to countless spots for visitors to warm up and wind down after a busy day’s exploring.
In fifth place on the list is a city which may come as a surprise to some: Athens. The Greek capital is usually thought of as a sunny destination and isn’t on many people’s “cosy city break” list, but it did get 9,243 upvotes on Reddit.
Athens proves that cosy doesn’t have to mean cold, with sun-drenched streets, traditional tavernas, tucked-away cafés and lively neighbourhoods offering a welcoming atmosphere throughout the autumn.
It’s followed in the ranking by another famously sunny city: Lisbon, which got 3,243 upvotes.
Lisbon’s tiled streets, historic trams and pastel-coloured buildings give it plenty of charm, while neighbourhood cafés, cosy wine bars and mild autumn temperatures make it ideal for a seasonal escape.
If you’re not a fan of the cold, but love feeling snug, both Lisbon and Athens offer a milder autumn escape, with cosy cafés and atmospheric streets to enjoy without the chill that sets in across much of Europe.
In seventh place, it’s back to chillier climes with Copenhagen. The Danish capital got 2,850 upvotes thanks, in part, to the fact it embraces the country’s concept of hygge, which centres around creating a warm, comfortable and inviting atmosphere, which is easy to find all around the city.
Salzburg and Utrecht complete the ranking, with 2,397 and 1,040 upvotes respectively. Austrian city Salzburg pairs mountain views and properly crisp weather with traditional coffee houses, while Utrecht in the Netherlands offers a quieter city break – and a great alternative to Amsterdam – with leafy canals, historic streets and independent cafés.
