From the same marketing minds that brought you Re-Nylon, Prada now releases Re-Wool and Re-Cashmere, a collection that transforms surplus wool and cashmere as well as defective fabrics and bits from the literal cutting-room floor into new yarns for ready-to-wear. The resulting fabric combines recycled wool and cashmere with virgin wool to inject new life into what otherwise would contribute to the earthly problem of billions of tons of clothing waste. It’s a practical recycling initiative that fares well with the grander philosophical idea of what it means to discard something in a quotidian way, and consequently, what is signified from recirculating it.
Re-Wool and Re-Cashmere now join Re-Nylon as the latest in a suite of environmental projects initiated by Prada under the same prefix. And it makes a lot of sense for the luxury brand to give more materials the Re-Nylon treatment, given how successful it’s been since its launch in 2019.
One of the main reasons why Re-Nylon worked was the nostalgia factor of the nylon backpack, one of the defining (if not the first) “It” bag of the ’90s. Bringing the style back has obvious repercussions given the plastic of it all, so re-inventing it with recycled fibers does a very distinctly Prada thing in merging the material with the conceptual.
It’s a recycled idea with physically recycled materials. And, the products can walk the walk, so to speak. There’s an added accountability measure of traceability via NFC tags on each piece documenting all the materials and suppliers as a part of its production journey.
This is the kind of intention that is just so Prada. By recycling materials into a recognizable design language, the brand is able to make circularity a method of production only additive to a sense of creative direction, rather than a chore.
