National Police Commission (Napolcom) Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan warned criminology interns on Saturday that violating traffic rules, including riding motorcycles without helmets, could jeopardize their applications to become police officers.
In a Facebook post, Calinisan urged the public to photograph criminology interns caught violating traffic regulations, saying authorities would identify them and refuse to process their applications for police service or entertain them in Napolcom examinations.
“Yang mga ‘Criminology Interns’ na mga walang helmet at nagba-violate ng traffic rules, take their photos. We will get their names, identify them, and we will NOT process their application as policemen or entertain them in the NAPOLCOM Exams,” he said.
(I urge the public to take photos of those "criminology interns" who ride motorcycles without helmets and violate traffic rules. We will obtain their names, identify them, and we will NOT process their applications to become police officers or allow them to take the NAPOLCOM examinations,” he said.
Calinisan’s warning comes amid recurring online complaints about alleged traffic violations by criminology students as Napolcom pushes to tighten police recruitment and improve criminology education.
Republic Act No. 6975, as amended by Republic Act No. 8551 or the Philippine National Police Reform and Reorganization Act of 1998, empowers Napolcom to establish policies and criteria for the recruitment and selection of police personnel.
The Napolcom commissioner called for reforms in the training of aspiring police officers and urged criminology schools to help identify and weed out students who display a sense of entitlement and disregard for the law.
“Nananawagan ako sa mga (I am appealing to) Criminology Schools: help us by weeding out these entitled individuals as early as possible. Di dapat sila maging pulis (They should not become police officers),” he said.
Calinisan also called on schools to improve their curricula and guard against operating as diploma mills, adding that producing responsible police officers was part of a broader responsibility to the nation.
“Salain ang dapat salain. Ayusin ang curriculum. Wag diploma mill (Screen those who need to be screened. Improve the curriculum. Do not operate diploma mills). Nationbuilding is everyone's responsibility,” he said.—MCG, GMA News
